WhatsApp or an Israeli number: what each solves

In short: For friends and family already talking to you on WhatsApp, an app is an excellent, free solution. It does not replace your Israeli number with your bank, with Israeli institutions, or with anyone who simply dials your number — and WhatsApp itself depends on that number still receiving messages.

Updated:

What an app genuinely solves

Calls and messages with people who are already there. Parents, friends, the family group — anyone who messages you on WhatsApp anyway carries on exactly as before, at no cost and with nothing to change.

For a short period, and for someone whose whole circle is in the app, that really can be enough.

What it does not solve

Verification codes. Your bank, your credit card company and government bodies send an SMS, not a WhatsApp message. Without the number that receives them, signing in stops.

Incoming calls from people who do not know you personally. An Israeli service centre, a doctor, a school or a client dials the number on their record — and if it does not take calls, the call simply does not arrive.

Outgoing calls that get answered. When you dial from a foreign number, a great many people do not pick up at all.

The part most people miss

WhatsApp itself is registered to your number, and from time to time it asks you to verify it again — certainly when you install it on a new device. That verification arrives by SMS or by a call to the number.

So the Israeli number is not an alternative to WhatsApp; it is what holds it up. Give up the number, then change phone abroad, and you may find you cannot get back into your own account.

So when is an app enough

For a short trip, with nothing due with a bank or an Israeli body, and when everyone who needs you is on WhatsApp — there is no reason to complicate it.

Once the period stretches, or there is a bank account, National Insurance, a business or children in the system, the question is no longer what suits you but what the other side knows how to do. They will dial the number.

What keeps both

The Israeli number carries on working over whatever internet connection you have: incoming and outgoing calls with an Israeli caller ID, and SMS both ways including verification codes.

WhatsApp carries on exactly as before, on the same number. There is nothing to choose between.

Frequently asked

Can I manage with WhatsApp alone abroad?

With people already talking to you there, yes. With your bank, Israeli service centres and anyone dialling your number, no.

Does the bank send verification codes over WhatsApp?

No. Banks, credit card companies and government bodies send an SMS to the number on their record.

If I give up the number, what happens to WhatsApp?

The account is registered to the number. Installing on a new device, WhatsApp asks to verify by SMS or a call to it, and without that getting back in is hard.

Does the service replace WhatsApp?

No, and it does not need to. The number keeps working and WhatsApp keeps working on it as usual.

What about video calls to family?

Those carry on in the app as usual. What the number adds is everything that does not go through it.
